Types of Treatment That Can Help with Addiction
Drug and alcohol addiction are varying serious, life-threatening diseases. Look at them in the same way you would look at cancer, heart disease, or diabetes. With proper care and management, it’s possible to regain control over your future. Like other health conditions, it’s crucial to seek treatment that’s specifically tailored to your condition, symptoms, and complications.
Consider some of the types of therapy that may be available to you. There are four basic levels of care, along with detox:
Outpatient Care
In this type of environment, you spend time once or twice a week receiving care at a treatment center. You go home in the evening to your family and may be able to continue to work.
Outpatient care may be best for those who:
- Have a drug-free, safe place to live
- Have ample support throughout the recovery process
- Do not exhibit symptoms of withdrawal when they stop using
- Want to stop using substances but need help doing so
- Need to stay at home to meet responsibilities to family and household
Intensive Outpatient Care
Intensive outpatient care allows a person to receive support for their mental health or substance abuse needs more consistently. You still live at home, but you’ll receive more support through frequent visits and, in some cases, daily care. Intensive outpatient treatment may be beneficial to those who:
- Have a drug-free, safe place to live
- Need structured support that includes individual, educational, and group therapy
- Program flexibility to continue to work or meet at-home needs
- Need more help than outpatient care, but do not need 24-hour care
- Have a family history of alcohol or drug addiction
Partial Hospitalization Program
Partial care programs are sometimes referred to as day treatment programs. You spend more time at the treatment center, often, on most days during the week, engaged in therapy. Partial hospitalization is sometimes a step-down treatment after traditional in-hospital care or may be a first step for some people. It may be beneficial to those who:
- Want to live at home and have a drug-free, safe place
- Need a high level of support as they transition away from the use of alcohol and drugs
- Do not need full-time hospitalization
- Need support for mental health and addiction treatment
- Need more restrictive oversight and support
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment, or traditional drug and alcohol addiction treatment, enables a person to live at a treatment center for 30 to 60 days. This is a safe place to live and provides you with daily support and care specific to your needs. You can expect the most hands-on support in this environment. Residential treatment may be best for those who:
- Have gone through detox
- Have physical, mental, and emotional complications
- Need 24-hour, around-the-clock care and support
- Have relapsed in the past
- Need to rebuild life skills and confidence
Detox Treatment
Detox is not a type of therapy itself. It is a starting point for anyone who displays dependency on alcohol or drugs. That means when you stop using those substances, you feel intense cravings, physical pain, and illness. Detox is short-term, often lasting only a matter of a few days until your body can remove the toxin buildup from the substances. You may need to start with detox if you:
- Have used substances for a long time
- Crave substances when you stop using them, even for a short period of time
- Have developed a severe level of dependency in which nothing is more important than seeking the use of the substance
- Have relapsed in the past
- Have underlying health conditions that make it essential to push through treatment
There is no cure for addiction, but there are numerous strategies that can help you rebuild your life and develop a stronger future. You have to take the first step.
