Deciding to get into addiction treatment is a choice to change your future. But if stepping away from your family for weeks at a time seems impossible, you may want to consider outpatient care. Outpatient programs allow clients to get support and guidance while still living at home.
How Does Outpatient Care Work for Addiction?
Those with mild to moderate addiction may be treated effectively through outpatient treatment. In this type of care, a person visits the therapist’s office or treatment center several times a week and then goes home after the session.
Outpatient care is not always possible. Those with serious addiction who need to go through detox may need inpatient care, a type of therapy in which you remain at the treatment center for several weeks or more. A primary advantage of inpatient retreatment is that it offers stability some clients may not have anywhere else.
Signs Outpatient Addiction Treatment May Be Beneficial to You
To determine if outpatient is right for you, set up an initial consultation with the admission counselors at The Ranch at Dove Tree for a more formal evaluation.
Outpatient treatment may be beneficial to you if:
- You live in a drug-free environment with people who support your efforts to recover..
- You can commit to about 15 hours a week of programming at the treatment center.
- The substance you are using is safe to stop using without medical detox support.
- This is not your first time trying to stop using substances.
- Based on your counselor’s assessment, you do not need 24-hour care.
- You have already completed inpatient treatment and are ready to step down to a less intensive level of care.
In each of these situations, outpatient care may offer the right type and level of support you need.
Types of Outpatient Treatment at The Ranch at Dove Tree
Outpatient treatment is customizable to meet your specific needs. You will work with your counselor and medical team to determine the type of care right for you. We offer two options:
- Partial hospitalization program: PHP treatment provides more advanced treatment, with clients coming in most days for a total of about 20 hours a week. Clients participate in group and individual therapy, as well as group education sessions that cover topics such as multi-family systems, the 12 Steps and Big Book studies, accessing community resources, accountability, meditation, relapse prevention, and more.
- Intensive outpatient program: IOP treatment provides a structured and comprehensive level of both mental health and substance use treatment for about 15 hours a week, decreasing as clients gain confidence in their recovery. IOP includes similar programming as PHP, with recovery education and group and individual therapy.

Signs Outpatient Care May Not Be Effective for You Yet
Some people need residential addiction treatment, living full-time at the treatment center and receiving 24-hour support. You may need this type of care if:
- You experience intense withdrawal when you stop taking the substance.
- You are putting yourself in danger of relapse when living at home.
- There are medical issues that stem from your substance use disorder that must be addressed.
- You have strong cravings for the substance, or you have been using it for a long time.
- You have tried outpatient care but have started using substances again.
You don’t have to make a decision about the care you need just yet. Instead, seek out the help of our admissions counselor to learn more about the various treatment options and how well they can meet your needs.
