What Is a Typical Day in Residential Treatment Like?

Residential addiction treatment is one of the cornerstones for substance use recovery. It means stepping away from life – family and friends, work, and school – to focus on yourself. That’s an incredibly hard step to take, especially when you’re going through such intense change. Yet residential treatment may provide you with the resources you need to turn the page and give yourself a truly fresh start.

More About Residential Treatment

The National Institute on Drug Abuse recognizes residential treatment as being a comprehensive level of support. Residential treatment focuses on individualized care for each client, helping them develop personal accountability and the power to change.

At The Ranch at Dove Tree, you’ll learn more about the specific aspects of our program when you come in for an assessment and speak to your team. Our professional caregivers will create an individualized treatment plan for you based on your unique background and situation.

What You Can Expect in Substance Abuse Treatment

Here’s a look at some of the aspects of treatment you may experience during day-to-day life at most accredited residential treatment centers, including The Ranch at Dove Tree.

Healthy Meals

Good food is a big part of feeling ready to embrace your day. Carefully designed meals help fuel the body’s recovery, both mentally and physically, from addiction. You’ll have time to enjoy breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks throughout the day.

Individual Therapy

During the day, you’ll work one-on-one with your therapist. This is a time for you to discuss your thoughts and needs. Therapy will help you learn about yourself and how to best support your own well-being. You’ll work to overcome and manage mental health disorders, past trauma, or poor stress management. Therapy may include cognitive-behavioral therapy and other types of evidence-based treatment.

Holistic Treatment

Holistic support helps treat the whole person. It takes into account social and mental factors, not just the physical symptoms of addiction. Holistic treatment options may include:

  • Using journaling to help manage emotional responses to triggers or cravings
  • Art and music therapy to help you express complicated emotions
  • Yoga and meditation to provide stress relief and build confidence
  • Equine therapy to improve interpersonal skills and build problem-solving abilities

Time to Relax

There’s fun to be had during treatment, too. You’ll meet people who are undergoing similar experiences and who you can relax and enjoy spending time with. Most facilities offer some type of indoor and outdoor recreation areas, like a fitness center, basketball and volleyball courses, and walking trails.

Group Therapy

Another component of residential addiction treatment is the use of group therapy, a time when you’ll come together with other people in treatment to learn strategies for dealing with tough situations, such as stress at school or work. You can share as much or as little as you want. Group therapy is an informative and supportive experience.

Family Therapy

Most treatment centers also offer some level of family therapy so that your loved ones can learn about addiction and how to best support you in your recovery. Family therapy is also a place to work through misunderstandings and practice healthy communication skills.
