How Long Does Addiction Treatment Take?

A woman engages in conversation with a man she appears attentive and interested.

Addiction recovery is a personal decision. It’s one based on your physical and mental health as well as on strategies to build a healthy, confident future. There’s no specific timeframe that applies to everyone. And, in some ways, this is a lifelong journey.

When it comes to substance abuse treatment, expect your care to range from 30 days up to six months.

Factors that contribute to the length of addiction treatment include:

  • Your physical and mental health needs
  • Necessity of detox
  • Level of care needed
  • Insurance coverage
  • Your goals and desires

At The Ranch at Dove Tree, we offer a range of program options to meet most needs. Learn more about our addiction treatment program in Lubbock, Texas, and how it can work to meet your specific needs and objectives.

Types of Addiction Treatment Programs and Length

Addiction treatment follows a basic timeline that’s adjusted to fit your needs. Those who have long-term, serious, and active addiction will find treatment takes longer than for those who are in a stable place. Consider the following types of addiction therapy and the length of care often associated with them.

Detox

Treatment Length: Up to 7 to 10 days

Many people in active addiction require a medically monitored detox program. It provides immediate support for medical needs. You’ll have access to medications and monitoring for any adverse side effects during the natural detoxification process. We manage your withdrawal symptoms to prepare you for additional treatment.

Residential Treatment Program

Treatment Length: 30 Days

During our 30-day treatment program, you’ll live in our home-like setting, navigating the ups and downs of living a sober lifestyle. Our traditional, 30-day track will include treatment such as:

  • 12-Step treatment program focused on the first five steps
  • Twice-a-week individual therapy sessions
  • At least 6 hours of group programming each day
  • Developmentally geared life skills groups
  • Family Week
  • Establishing a daily wellness routine that includes nutrition and recreation

This program focuses on the reintegration of life skills, revival of purpose and hope, commitment to service, and a healthy family.

Residential Treatment Program

Treatment Length: 60 Days

Many people benefit from a long-term residential treatment program providing 60 days of care. Our 60-day transitional living track restores healthy relationships and lifestyles to create a solid foundation. During your 60-day treatment, you’ll benefit from:

  • 12-Step treatment focuses on steps 6 to 9
  • At least 6 hours of group programming per day
  • Individual therapy at least twice a week
  • Activity and experiential-based learning, including creative expression groups, equine-assisted psychotherapy, outdoor adventure, and service work
  • In-depth family week
  • Daily wellness routines

Each week during your 60-day treatment plan, there will be a specific core theme designed to support your resilience in recovery.

Intensive Outpatient Program

Treatment Length: Typically 8 to 12 weeks

Intensive outpatient program, or IOP, provides care for a period of 8 to 12 weeks with around 9 to 15 hours of treatment at the location. You’ll live at home throughout the care journey. Many people will embrace IOP after residential treatment. During IOP, you can expect:

  • Group therapy sessions
  • Individual therapy sessions
  • 12-Step program support
  • Supportive, community-based programs to fill in the care needs you have

Our IOP programs are very specific to your needs. We’ll work on topics and areas of concern specific to your situation and real-world complications you’re facing on any given day. We treat the whole person, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

How Long Do You Need Addiction Treatment to Recover?

While our programs mentioned here provide the framework for helping you to heal in a short amount of time, the work is never really complete. Most people will move from IOP to traditional outpatient treatment, which means meeting 1 or 2 times a week, depending on your needs. You may supplement this care with the support of community outreach programs.

Long-term drug and alcohol treatment is often recommended. Remember that there is no cure for addiction, which means that you are constantly working towards maintaining your health and wellbeing. It is our goal to help you navigate that process in real time. That means we tailor treatment to be as much or as limited as you need at this point. That gives you the best foundation for recovery and staying healthy long-term.
